Noumea's two main beaches are situated on the southern side of the island (about 20-30 minutes drive from where we are). They are quite near the city centre which makes for a great outing - shopping, gawking in the morning, followed by a swim and then lunch in one of the many cafes along the waterfront (and then back in the water for another dip).

Anse Vata beach is popular with the windsurfing/ kitesurfing brigade due to its wind and waves (well, small waves?). Lemons Bay (or Baie des Citrons) is a pretty beach especially popular with families (and anyone who would rather be out of the wind)

We tried both after a wander around the town and a visit to the local markets - lovely cool and clear water (nothing like the chilly waters we often experience back home). Both were pretty empty, it being a working day for the unfortunates who aren't retired.
